What a Buyer Would Find in Your Business | Value Velocity
When someone considers buying a business, they look closely at how it really runs. That review, called due diligence, often turns up issues the owner never noticed. By then it's too late to fix them, and they come off the price. The smart move is to look at your business the way a buyer would, years before you ever plan to sell.
1. Does the business depend on you?
If sales, key relationships or daily decisions all run through the owner, a buyer sees risk. The fix: build a team that can run the business without you, and document how things get done.
2. Are your financials clean and consistent?
Messy books, mixed personal expenses and inconsistent reporting make a business harder to trust. The fix: get to clear, consistent monthly financials, so your real performance is easy to see.
3. How concentrated is your revenue?
If a few customers or one supplier make up a big share of your business, losing one could hurt. The fix: diversify your customer base and line up backup suppliers for anything critical.
4. Is your revenue predictable?
Recurring, contracted revenue is worth more than one-time sales. The fix: look for ways to turn part of your model into repeat or subscription-style revenue.
5. Are your systems written down?
If your processes live only in people's heads, they walk out the door when those people do. The fix: document your key processes, systems and know-how so they belong to the business.
Why this matters even if you never sell
Every fix on this list makes your business run better today: less stress on you, steadier cash flow and a stronger team. And if the day comes when you do want to sell, hand it to family, or bring in a partner, you'll meet it from a position of strength.
